You probably know your roof. But could you point to your fascias? Your soffits? For most of us, these are just... bits. Bits up there, doing something that we never give a second thought to, until a wet patch appears on the bedroom ceiling or the gutter starts sagging after a storm.
The funny thing is, these quiet, unglamorous parts are working hard for your home every single day. So here's a friendly, no-jargon guide to what they actually are, why they matter, and how to spot when one of them needs a bit of attention.
Picture the edge of your roof, where it meets the top of your wall. That's where you'll find soffits, fascia, and guttering.
Your fascia is the board that runs along that edge. It's the straight line you see when you look up at the front of the house. Your guttering is bolted straight onto it, so it's quietly holding up a lot of weight, especially when the gutters are full of rain. It's also the part everyone can see from the street, so when it starts to look tired, so does the whole house.
Tucked underneath, on the underside of the overhang, is the soffit. Look straight up from below the edge of your roof, and you're looking at it. As well as neatly closing off the gap up there, it usually has little vents that let your roof breathe, which keeps damp and condensation from building up in the loft.
And then there's the guttering itself, doing the job you'd expect: catching the rain as it runs off the roof and carrying it through the downpipes, safely away from your walls and foundations.
